Visit by Professor Ross Garnaut AC
Ross Garnaut AC, Professorial Research Fellow in Economics at the University of Melbourne, was at Curtin University 31 January 2020 at an event co-hosted by John Curtin Institute of Public Policy (JCIPP) and Sustainable Energy Now (SEN). His presentation, which attracted over 500 attendees, was based on ideas from his compelling new book, Superpower: Australia’s low-carbon opportunity published by La Trobe University Press.

Professor John Phillimore from the John Curtin Institute of Public Policy has been appointed a panel member to help recommend high-level direction and guiding principles for the new Local Government Act of WA.

JCIPP Adjunct Professor John Edwards wins Prime Minister’s Literary Award
JCIPP Adjunct Professor, John Edwards, has won the PM’s Literary Award in the Australian History category with his book John Curtin’s War: The Coming of War in the Pacific, and Reinventing Australia, Volume 1.
John Edwards has written six non-fiction books, including the bestselling Keating: The Inside Story. He is a non-resident fellow at the Lowy Institute and adjunct professor at the John Curtin Institute of Public Policy at Curtin University. He has been a member of the board of the Reserve Bank of Australia, Chief Economist for HSBC Bank in Australia and New Zealand, and was a senior economic adviser for Treasurer and then Prime Minister Paul Keating.

Global study finds youngest in class more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD
A new global study led by Curtin University researchers has found that children who are the youngest in their classroom are more likely to be diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) than their older classmates.
The research, published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, systematically reviewed studies that examine the relationship between a child’s age relative to their classmates and their chances of being diagnosed with, or medicated for, ADHD.

Curtin University awards honorary doctorate to Julia Gillard
Former Prime Minister and Patron of the John Curtin Prime Ministerial Library the Honourable Julia Gillard AC, was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters. Ms Gillard was recognised for her outstanding contribution to public life, particularly to education.
Geoff Gallop AC visits Curtin
On Friday the John Curtin Institute of Public Policy (JCIPP) held a special event with former Premier of Western Australia and Adjunct Professor, Hon Geoff Gallop AC. Professor Gallop gave a talk on Liberty, equality and community – the fundamentals of modern politics.
The event also marked the launch of the Geoff Gallop Essay Collection that now features on the JCIPP website.
The collection covers a range of his writing on politics and democracy, public administration and management, public policy, commonwealth-state relations, health and wellbeing and also religion.

JCIPP hosts Visiting Research Fellows
JCIPP hosted two Visiting Research Fellows, Dr Elisabeth Alber from the Institute for Comparative Federalism at Eurac Research, Italy and Dr Johanna Schnabel, University of Kent, UK. Drs Alber and Schnabel were in Perth to collaborate with Professors Phillimore and Fenna on aspects of Federalism related to their research.
