Community and students
Accelerating the energy transition with Henrik Stiesdal
In October, CIET hosted Danish wind pioneer, Henrik Stiesdal, for a special forum on the opportunities for transition and transformation in Western Australia. Henrik has been instrumental in shaping the wind energy and climate mitigation industries in Europe and had many lessons to share about accelerating the energy transition globally.
People Power for a Just Transition with Sharan Burrow
In August, CIET were lucky enough to host our Advisory Board Chair, Sharan Burrow AC, for a special seminar on the role of unions, justice and labour rights for a Just Transition. In this seminar, Sharan discussed the importance of sustainable business development and the roles of human rights, employment and justice when it comes to delivering a Net Zero future.
Falling Walls Perth Lab
In July, Curtin hosted the first-ever Perth Falling Walls Lab, with 19 presenters sharing their innovative research ideas. Dr Jacob Martin, winner of the Perth Lab, also won the all-Australia competition and is headed to Berlin to compete at the international finale later this year!
Richgro BioEnergy plant student visit
Led by A/ Prof. Atiq Zaman (Theme Lead: Circular Economy), Masters of Environment and Climate Emergecny students were invited to visit the Richgro BioEnergy plant and learn about the technical and socio-economic aspects of Anaerobic Digestion (AD) technology.
Research Rumble: Powering the future
Powering the Future: Advancing the Energy Transition with Critical Minerals. Researchers from the CIET teamed up with colleagues from the WA School of Mines to discuss how to incorporate sustainability into the field of critical minerals exploration, extraction and processing.
Information session
CIET held an information event for all Curtin students and staff with an interest in energy research, climate action and sustainability. This session was a fantastic opportunity for students and academics from different disciplines to connect with one another and the Institute.
Dr Alan Finkel book launch
CIET hosted a book launch for Dr Alan Finkel’s newest release Powering Up. Dr Finkel and Professor Peta Ashworth discussed the changing energy landscape in Australia, and the importance of urgent energy transition.
Energaia: Imagining energy futures
Energaia was an exhibition of work from visual artists, film-makers, designers and writers engaging with low carbon energy futures.

Petrocultures24: SOUTH
11-13 November 2024
Curtin’s Energy Humanities Initiative will be largely responsible for the organisation, joined up with colleagues from the eastern States, and with Curtin’s Institute for Energy Transition as the primary on-campus sponsor. Across Australia and in the region, there is growing interest in (and urgent need for) the humanities, the social sciences, and the creative arts to engage in critical and imaginative scholarship and praxis.
Australian Hydrogen Research Conference
4-6 September 2024
Co-hosted by Curtin University and UWA, the 2nd Australian Hydrogen Research Conference 2024 is being held in Perth, Western Australia. The AHRC invites industry, policy makers, researchers and students to promote, review and discuss Hydrogen Research, commercial and policy developments, education and collaboration.
Energy research workshop and seed funding

Curtin’s inaugural round of seed funding kicked off with an energy research workshop held at Curtin. Researchers from more than six Schools came together to brainstorm ideas for innovative. multidisciplinary energy research projects.
Energy in Western Australia Conference
15-16 August 2024
The Energy in WA Conference has been the State’s premier energy event since 1996. Proudly hosted by the Australian Institute of Energy (Perth branch) and Energy Policy WA (Government of Western Australia), this highly popular conference is organised by the local energy industry for the local energy industry.
State of Energy Research Conference 2024
14-16 February 2024
This year Curtin Institute for Energy Transition hosted the Energy Research Institutes Council of Australia (ERICA) State of Energy Research Conference (SoERC). The conference was a fantastic opportunity to learn and network from energy peers, with attendees coming not just from interstate but also overseas.
3rd Global South Nexus International Conference

The 3rd GSN International Conference was held in Bhubaneswar (India) on the topic of Creating Responsible Professionals for Advancing SDGs: Inputs from Global North and South.
International Conference on Innovation, Sustainability and Applied Sciences (ICISAS)
9-10 December 2023
Hosted by Curtin Dubai to coincide with COP28, ICISAS was held in December 2023. Circular Economy Theme Lead A/ Prof. Atiq Zaman was invited to speak on a panel discussing net-zero built environments.

As a member of the UN Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition (UN CEET), A/ Prof. Atiq Zaman (Theme Lead Circular Economy) participated in the COP28 Conference in Dubai and attended CEET-organized sessions. He also chaired the Energy Transition Session (Panel 1) with UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).
