Novel modular panel system for multi-hazard resistant construction

This project funded by the Australian Research Council will develop a lightweight modular structural system using advanced construction material, wall and floor panels, and connections designed for multi-hazard resistance against wind, seismic, vibration and impact loading, etc.

Two PhD scholarships are available within the Centre of Infrastructural Monitoring and Protection (CIMP), School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, Curtin University (Bentley, Australia). Successful candidates will work with Dr Andrew Lacey on the above Early Career Industry Fellowship project, in collaboration with Professors Wensu Chen and Hong Hao.

Increasing exposure to natural hazards demands resilient, rapid construction solutions. This project addresses this need through lightweight, cost-effective modular panels manufactured from advanced construction material. The outcomes will include experimentally validated design methods and sustainable construction solutions.

Ideal Candidate

Minimum requirement: Bachelor’s degree (first-class honours or upper second-class honours) in Civil and Structural Engineering or related discipline. Substantial relevant industry experience is preferred.

Applicants with Master’s degrees with technical publications and research experience in structural engineering, structural analysis, mechanics, structural dynamics, structural protection and materials science are preferred.

Applicants must meet Curtin University’s English language proficiency requirements for HDR admission. This normally requires: IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0; or TOEFL iBT: Overall score of 79, with minimum scores of Reading 13, Listening 13, Speaking 18, and Writing 21.

As the project involves industry collaboration, applicants should be able to communicate effectively in interdisciplinary environments and be willing to work closely with industry partners.

The successful applicant must be eligible to enrol full-time in the Doctor of Philosophy – Civil Engineering research degree at Curtin University’s Bentley campus through the School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering.

This project is open to domestic and international applicants.

Scholarship

These PhD scholarships are funded by the Australian Research Council via Early Career Industry Fellowship and Curtin University.

Two Scholarships are available to support successful candidates with a living stipend, up to the value of $38440 per annum, based on full-time enrolment, for a maximum period of 3 years with possible six month extension.
