Analysing physical drivers of long-term changes in phytoplankton in the Southern Ocean, revealing how phytoplankton fluorescence can help assessing their physiological status, and making recommendations about “System Vicarious Calibration” for climate and global long-term operational ocean colour applications are the subjects of some of our recent publications.

June 2025

Md Shahin Hossain Shuva has started his HDR at Curtin in June 2025, as part of the WA Government (JTSI)-funded project “Advancing predictions of WA marine heatwaves (MHW) and impacts on marine ecosystems”. Shahin will work on characterising MHW off WA by using satellite ocean colour data in particular, trying to understand their connections to the large-scale functioning of the Indian Ocean and assessing the potential impact on the phytoplankton ecosystem.

Prof David Antoine participated to the One Ocean Science Congress, which was held in Nice, 3 – 6 June 2025. This gathering of ocean scientists from all over the world (> 2,000 attendees) was preparatory to the United Nation Ocean Conference number 3 (UNOC3) that was held the following week.

In the frame of the MarONet project, we have installed a sun photometer on Rottnest Island, as part of the NASA-led AERONET. This instrument allows determining the load of aerosols in the atmosphere and their type. These data will be combined with those of the MarONet buoy to allow System Vicarious Calibration (SVC) of the NASA PACE mission.

As part of his PhD work under the ARC Australia Centre for Excellence in Antarctic Science (ACEAS), Rony Golder has been awarded a travel grant by the French “Isblue” program. This award will allow him to travel to Brest at the LOPS to be trained about machine learning techniques for data reconstructions and for projections in response to scenarios of climate change .

Prof David Antoine participated to the Indian Ocean Forum Perth, organised by the Minderoo and Forrest Research foundations and the Embassy of France to Australia. This event was preparatory to the United Nation Ocean Conference 3 (UNOC3) to be held in Nice, France, June 2025.

Prof David Antoine participated to the 2025 annual planning meeting of IMOS (Australia ”Integrated Marine Observing System”), as part of our ongoing and enduring collaboration with this NCRIS facility. This year the meeting was held in Adelaide, 25 – 27 February.

As indicated on the meeting web page, “The 2025 IMOS Annual Meeting brings together key discussions on national marine science strategy, industry partnerships, and emerging opportunities to expand marine observation, while also beginning preparations for IMOS’s upcoming 20-year milestone. ”
