Introduction
Overview
Professor Fran Ackermann is a Research Professor in the School of Management. She has been Dean, Research and Development, Curtin Business School (2013-2017) and before that Head of the Department of Management Science at Strathclyde Business School in Glasgow.
Fran's main research interests lie in two areas. The first is complex project management with a particular interest in systemic risk which stemmed from extensive work in disruption and delay modelling. Fran is interested in helping project managers avoid many of the pitfalls experienced on projects. The second is strategy development concentrating on elements of strategy making such as the identification of distinctive and core competences and stakeholder management within a negotiative paradigm. With Professor Colin Eden, Fran has developed an approach to strategy making that is extensively used in organisations and has been adopted in a number of university courses. Fran is keen to ensure that strategy is developed that is both robust and owned.
Both research arenas are supported by cause/cognitive mapping (a technique for modelling complex qualitative data) and Group Support System (software tool enabling group productivity and anonymity). Both the tool and techique were developed as part of the research work.
Fran has held positions at Bordeaux Business School, The University of Western Australia, Tillburg University and has strong ties with the University of Minnesota and State University of New York. She is currently an Honourary Professor at the Manchester Business School and Adjunct Professor at Strathclyde Business School. She is a BAM Fellow, a senior editor of Decision Support Systems and has been both an ESRC and EPSRC grant assessor.

Research Interests
A fascination with supporting complex decision making has driven Fran's research along with a strong belief in Lewin's view that nothing is as practical as good theory (1951, p169). As such she has sought and continues to seek insights and practices that are both practical and intellectually rigorous.
Based on a common framework (the use of a casual mapping technique and support of specially designed software - Decision Explorer and Group Explorer), Fran has two main research foci.
The first concentrates on complex project management. Originating in work into disruption and delay modelling (through being part of a team involved in modelling the indirect costs on 12 litigation projects), Fran became particularly interested in developing and refining of processes and techniques for risk assessment and management. As such a risk filter and specially designed workshops have been developed and employed in organisations testing the efficacy of the techniques. The work in disruption and delay modelling also gave rise to the development of a mixed methodology for modelling indirect costs namely CASCADE (weaving together causality and quantum). This work also has implications for insights into project cost overruns, project failure and reduction of rework. Considerable research funding and publications have emerged from this work.
The second research foci examines strategy making and to date has encompassed considerable exploration into the area of strategy development and implementation recently examining the importance of collaborative strategy when working in public sector arenas. Particular emphasis has been given to both stakeholder management and modelling distinctive and core competences ensuring organizational competitive advantage with work on scenario development and performance measurement complementing this avenue. This research has led to the development of an approach to strategy making that is the focus of four books (with one in its second edition) and is now well established and taught in a number of business schools. It has also led to extensive work with organisations.
To carry out the above research, the primary research method used has been Action Research. This is a method of attempting to intervene in a system whilst at the same time testing research hypotheses. One of the main benefits is that direct involvement provides a powerful way to observe, interact and consequently understand the nature of top/senior management teams. As such the results are more of a strategic/applied nature than pure theory development. As a basis for much of this research, it builds on a range of theories from an array of disciplines including psychology, management/strategic management, information systems, project management, group behaviour and negotiation. This integration has been informed by being a key member of an extensive academic network in Europe and the US.
Fran is widely published, having produced five books, 24 book chapters and more than 60 peer reviewed journal articles (predominantly A and A*). She has been a regular speaker at international conferences and regularly invited to contribute towards Handbooks. Fran has also been involved in a number of research projects with total funding for these projects having exceeded $4 million. Fran is an active supervisor of postgraduate students, having 16 completed PhD/DBA students, seven ongoing students.
