Introduction
Professor Cameron Neylon is Professor of Research Communication at Curtin University’s Centre for Culture and Technology. Over the past decade Neylon has built an international reputation as one of the leading thinkers, technologists, and strategists on open approaches in scholarly communication and research more broadly. He is a highly respected Open Access activist: combining a rigorous background in empirical science with an interest in mechanisms for change across global systems for knowledge creation. Neylon is a sought-after writer, speaker and advisor to companies, funders, research institutions, and governments on the challenges of research management.

Research Interests
The central thread in Neylon’s research and scholarship is how an understanding of systems and their emergent properties can be combined with design approaches to build tools that enable maximally effective interventions. This has frequently taken the form of an information analysis that identifies a point of maximum leverage, followed by tool building, information gathering or coalition building to attack that point.
In his work as a biological scientist, Neylon was involved in defining how the new set of technologies for DNA sequencing would need to work. In his work on article level and alternative research metrics he has consistently been at the forefront of defining how the new data available on scholarly communication can be used to create an environment that effects social change in the academy (and what risks those social changes might pose). His policy work on Open Access and Open Data has focussed on how the unique data and information that can now be obtained through digital networks can be deployed to shape and inform a debate.
At Curtin, Neylon is engaging with the New Models of Publishing research program being undertaken within CCAT.
