Research Interests
The focus of my research is on high risk behaviours, particularly alcohol abuse and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), exhibited by young people. Both alcohol abuse and NSSI pose significant health risks to young people, and both increase risk of suicide. Although most people who self-injure do not have suicidal thoughts at the time, they are 42 times more likely to attempt suicide than those who do not self-injure. People who drink heavily have five times greater risk of suicide than the general population. Further, both alcohol use and NSSI pose significant financial burden. NSSI alone costs Australians an estimated $14mil per month in direct hospital costs. The aim of my research program is to inform and develop essential education, prevention and early intervention initiatives, in order to reduce the negative psychological and physical impact of these behaviours.
