Decommissioning represents a significant and time-sensitive opportunity for WA and Australia as a whole, with strong engagement from industry, government, regulators, academics, unions and the workforce. Realising this opportunity requires not just a plan, but concrete decisions and coordinated action across the entire value chain.
In April 2026, CIET and Worley brought together almost 80 key stakeholders from across Australia’s offshore decommissioning sector for a one-day workshop in Perth. Participants spanned regulators, industry bodies, port authorities, unions, engineering and contracting firms, and researchers.
Through three themed panel discussions, international presentations, and structured table sessions, the workshop examined the global context, opportunities for innovation, and the logistics, infrastructure and workforce challenges that must be addressed to realise Australia’s decommissioning potential.
The report below presents the key insights from those discussions and sets out priority recommendations for action.
