Areas over which Native Title has been determined, or are under application, now account for around 85 per cent of Western Australia’s land mass.
Aboriginal Assets? The impact of major agreements associated with Native Title in Western Australia is a new report by the Curtin University and the University of Western Australia, funded by the Department of Regional Development, Western Australia.
This report addresses the question of how effective agreements arising from Native Title determinations are at meeting the needs and aspirations of Aboriginal peoples who have achieved, or are pursuing (through registered Native Title claims), legal recognition as Native Title holders.
In addition to a review of existing academic literature, the authors interviewed three Western Australian Aboriginal Native Title groups to gain an understanding of their aspirations for the agreements and whether these objectives are being met.
The research team would like to sincerely thank the three participating Prescribed Bodies Corporate. We recognise the value of both your time and expertise, and acknowledge that this project would not have proceeded without your generous involvement.
