As key component of the agreement is DuPont’s sponsorship of a new award, exclusive to CBS academics and research students, titled the “DuPont Sustainable Innovation Award”.

The Award recognises the best innovation in the field of business, with the winners receiving a prize to the value of $10K. The prize comprises a trip to DuPont’s Innovation and Business Hub in Singapore and a cash prize.

The collaboration is important for CBS, as it aligns with the University’s strong focus on innovation, and supports CBS’ industry connectedness.

  • Showcase the research capabilities, talents, and ideas of CBS researchers and students.
  • Understand what academia can provide as well as what industry is looking for.
  • Highlight potential themes and current research priority areas.
  • Provide a platform for researchers to communicate their discoveries.
  • Allow the dissemination of knowledge by academics for industry applications.

2016 Award winners

The inaugural award was highly competitive with seven applications being received across a wide range of topics and themes.

The School of Marketing team comprising Prof Ian Phau, Dr Min Teah, Dr Isaac Cheah, Dr Billy Sung and Dr Michael Lwin won the award through demonstrating how their innovative mobile headset could become a valuable application to industry. The new technology uses biometric sensors to measure human reactions such as heart rate, skin conductance, eye gaze and brainwaves, and tracks a consumer’s emotional state through facial recognition software.

The Biometric Market Research Laboratory is fully operational and currently in use. The team is always on the lookout for clients or partners who can assist them in developing the service for a wider client base.

“It was a great opportunity for the team to be able to visit the DuPont Headquarters. They provided a very thorough tour of their facilities in Singapore and showcased the signature innovations at DuPont. In addition, the experience allowed the team to further develop our project and to bring the innovation to the next level. Through this experience, it gave us deeper insights into what DuPont’s DNA on innovation is all about and how we can integrate the same into our research process. The award allowed us to establish connections and networks with DuPont that can extend to further collaborative projects. The DuPont Innovation Award was overall a great experience. The prize money was great, but it was better that we could meet like-minded researchers and passionate people who value, live and breathe innovation. ”
