Who must complete a report?
Students
- Students whose study is sponsored by an external organisation (e.g. a foreign embassy or government, or students in receipt of a Curtin International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (CIPRS), International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) or Curtin Strategic International Research Scholarship (CSIRS))
- Students who commenced their course of study before 31 December of the year prior to the reporting year.
- Students who are undertaking coursework units only prior to being enrolled in the thesis unit.
- Students who are currently on Leave of Absence and/or have been on Leave of Absence since the last Annual Progress Report. (The report, including a timeline of work yet to be completed, is an indicator of intent to continue enrolment in the next year.)
Note: Students who are currently on Leave of Absence will have a status of "leave of absence" rather than a status of "enrolled".
Supervisors
- Supervisors of sponsored higher degree by research students (including Interim Supervisors). However, in some cases, for example when a Supervisor is on leave, an Associate Supervisor or Co-Supervisor may complete the report instead.
Note: Supervisors must complete reports for those students who have a status of "enrolled" as at 31 December of the year prior to the reporting year, are currently on Leave of Absence and/or have been on Leave of Absence since the last Annual Progress Report, and are undertaking coursework units only prior to being enrolled in the thesis unit.
Who does not need to complete a report?
Students
- Students whose study is not sponsored by an external organisation
- Students who commenced their course of study after 31 December of the year prior to the reporting year.
Note: Students who are on Leave of Absence and students undertaking coursework units only prior to being enrolled in their thesis unit must submit a report as stated under the "Who must complete a report?" section. - Students who have submitted their thesis to the Thesis Examinations Officer in the Office of Research and Development on or prior to 31 March of the reporting year.
- Students who have officially notified the University of their complete withdrawal from their course on or prior to 31 March of the reporting year.
Supervisors
- Associate Supervisors and Co-Supervisors of sponsored higher degree by research students (including Interim Associate/Co-Supervisors). However, in some cases, for example when a Supervisor is on leave, an Associate Supervisor or Co-Supervisor may complete the report instead.
What to do before completing a report
Students
- Sponsored students should meet with their Supervisor (or alternate member of their Thesis Committee if the Supervisor is not available) to discuss their progress and completion of their report. Download the List of points to guide the Students pre-ISSR discussion with the Supervisor.
Note: If a student is unable to communicate with the supervisor or other member of the thesis committee before the due date, indicate the reason in the report at Question 13.
Supervisors
- Supervisors should meet with their sponsored higher degree by research student/s prior to submitting their report/s. Download the List of points to guide the Supervisor's pre-ISSR discussion with the Student. .
- Associate Supervisors and Co-Supervisors (including Interim Associate/Co-Supervisors) may have to meet with their sponsored higher degree by research student/s if they are completing a report on behalf of a Supervisor who is on leave. If so, download the List of points to guide the Supervisor's pre-ISSR discussion with the Student.
What happens if you do not complete a report?
Students
- Sponsored students who do not submit their ISSR by the closing date of the reporting period will have their enrolment withdrawn and their status changed to Absent Without Leave (AWOL). The Faculty Graduate Studies Committee may recommend to the University Graduate Studies Committee that the enrolment of students who are Absent Without Leave for over six months be terminated (see Section 9 (b) and 16(a)(iv) of Rules 10 and 11).
Supervisors
- Supervisors who do not submit an ISSR for their sponsored student by the closing date of the reporting period will cause their student's enrolment status for the next year, allocated through the Head of Enrolling Area Review process, to remain as "pending".
- A list of supervisors who have not completed reports shall be provided to Heads of Enrolling Area, and copied to the Faculty Pro Vice-Chancellor.
What happens to the confidential document submitted by a student?
If a student has submitted a document, in confidence, detailing any concerns that he/she has regarding his/her candidacy (as Question 27 of their report) then these comments will not be presented to the Head of Enrolling Area for review and will be considered separately by the Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research Training within the Office of Research and Development.
Note: A student's entire report is not confidential, only the separately submitted document is considered in confidence.
